SPRING BREAK: Top 5 Tips to Avoid Weight Gain

Next week is Spring Break (for many of us), meaning travel and/or being out of your normal routine. It can be easy to let your goals slide and to add a few extra pounds when vacationing, so here are my top five tips to help you stay strong and remember your goals:

  1. Be intentional about what you eat and why. Avoid using vacation as an excuse to eat whatever you want whenever you want it. Those calories still count! Check out nutrition information online prior to ordering and try to order meals out based on the main lean protein source. Restaurants have a way of sneaking extra fat into dishes, so controlling your fat intake by asking for items prepared with low oil or with sauce or dressings on the side is an easy way to control that yourself.

  2. Pack or buy snacks that fit your goals. This is so easy to do and can have a big impact! Instead of being at the mercy of vending machines or café offerings, throw some snacks for the family in your bag. This saves you money and helps you stay on track! I also stock the mini fridge in our hotel room with fresh fruit, greek yogurt, string cheese, and sugar free pudding cups!

  3. Stay hydrated! Because dehydration is the devil. If you’re traveling by air this is even more important. Air travel dehydrates pretty significantly so I recommend getting a minimum of 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight on air travel days. Throughout your trip, be intentional about having water with you and how many times you refill your water bottle. Aim for at least half of your weight in ounces per day.

  4. Stay active! Keep moving! A calorie burned is a calorie burned whether it’s a walk on the beach or a game of tag with your kiddos. Make it fun!

  5. Focus on family and friends, not just food! The point of vacation is to unplug and recharge. To spend time making memories that you’ll cherish. Focus on engaging with your family and friends and not splurging on food/drinks.

Vacation is a time to have fun and make memories with your family and friends! It’s entirely possible to enjoy your food and still stick to your goals. Be intentional about what you’re eating and why, and have fun!
