Dieting v. Learning Your Food


We all want results yesterday. We go on binge diets and fasts in order to drop weight quickly only to gain it back when we return to old habits. The weight loss industry is super lucrative because of our repeated use of their programs and products, all in an effort to change the way we look or to feel better and more confident.

I started Truth Nutrition Coaching to set people free from chronic dieting. When you take the time to learn your food and start to understand what balanced eating looks and feels like for you, it makes dieting a thing of the past! Now, don’t get me wrong, learning your food isn’t easy. It doesn’t happen over night. But it’s the most realistic and concrete way of managing a healthy body weight and improving overall health.

The method I use with my clients to help make balanced eating more of a tangible concept is macro counting. It’s where I prescribe goals around protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fiber intake in order to set some actual guideposts as to how they can eat to meet their goals. When the goal is weight loss, we will still need to be in a caloric deficit but it’s nothing like dieting. Dieting preaches restriction and often tells you what you can and cannot eat. When you switch to learning your food and discovering what balance in your eating looks like for you, you’re able to incorporate the foods you love while still achieving your goals.

When you’re dieting, you’re eating differently than you typically eat and it’s not likely the way you want to eat for the rest of your life. When you’re eating balanced and have put in the time and effort to learn your food, you’ve developed a healthy habit around eating that will serve you for life. It eliminates the need to go on binge diets or to try and out exercise your food. It truly does set you free!
