I love summer. I love the excitement of the last days of school, the warm weather, the sunshine, and the relaxed feel to the long days.
Summer brings outside activities, cookouts, and vacations. These can be great times, but it can also mean roadblocks for your nutrition goals.
Here are a few tips for navigating summer cookouts, parties, and vacations.
Have a plan on what to eat. Try and find out ahead of time what may be served at cookouts or parties and plan your best choices. Bring a healthy option to share. Look up restaurant menus before you go. Then stick to your plan.
Limit alcohol. Again, have a plan if you are going to indulge. Alcoholic beverages are essentially empty calories that add up quick.
Enjoy your food. Indulge a little. Choose foods you really want to splurge on and then enjoy every bite. Add more seasonal fruit to your plate like fresh peaches, berries, and watermelon.
Eat before. If you know you will have limited healthy options, have a well balanced, whole food meal or snack before you go so you won’t be so tempted.
Get outside. Summer weather is great for walking, hiking, swimming, kayaking, and sightseeing. Plan time to be active, even on vacation.
Most importantly, take the time to relax and enjoy the summer!
